A new study out of India suggests that many men don’t report the sexual problems they are experiencing to their doctor (Times Of India). 75% of men are reticent to bring it up but would be satisfied if the doctor asked if they were experiencing any sexual issues. President of the South Asian Society of Sexual Medicine and consultant Andrologist of the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, Dr. Rupin Shah, conducted the study.
Taking the history of the patient and doing simple investigations can start to unravel the patient’s problem. Smoking, alcohol and drug consumption, work related and other stressors, and how they contribute or can in fact cause the problem are looked into. The sexual history taken from the patient should be detailed to determine the root of the issue.

According to Dr. Shah, many younger men and others are now abusing testosterone supplements. This misuse actually ends up decreasing sperm counts rather than increasing them. Lucky for most men today, modern andrology or the understanding of sex hormones is increasing the number of ways in which we can treat erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation (PE) and other sexual issues common in men.
Sexual issues can be the result of an underlying health concern that can be quite serious. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other serious health issues may be first seen as sexual health complications such as ED. Be sure to see your doctor if you are experiencing any sexual health issues. Sometimes mental health problems such as anxiety, stress and depression can also lead to sexual dysfunction. Consider what factors have changed in your life.
What other physical or emotional problems have occurred or even cropped up around the same time that the sexual issue began? Don’t be afraid or nervous to bring up the issue with your doctor. Letting it go too long and finding out that the underlying problem was depression or heart disease, just as two examples, can make the problem far worse. In fact, it can become life threatening. It may mean a couple of uncomfortable minutes with your doctor, however, they could actually save your life.
The longer you wait the worse the underlying issue may become. Treatment is often easier and less intrusive when a problem is caught early versus when it is at an advanced stage. Diabetes is another issue that can cause ED. In fact, the longer a man lives with diabetes, the more pronounced his ED will become if left untreated. 27% of people living with the disease don’t even know it. If you are susceptible, get tested. Don’t let things go out of embarrassment.
